I have an old Case sickle bar I'm wanting to fix up and the ledger plates are pretty wore on the rock guards. Is it feasible to replace just the ledgers rather than the whole rock guard. They appear to have one rivet through them and the rock guards are about $6 a piece and I need 24 of them. Thought I might be able to save a little if this can be done.

It helps if you have a knife repair block to hold the guards while driving out the rivets.any I have done have had the rivet go all the way thru and have been peened.I drive the rivets down and out.A heavy pointed punch is used to start the rivet and a punch the same size as the rivet finishes driving it out.The heavy pointed punch cut the cone head off the rivet.I have always replaced ledger plates even when I got new rock guards for 2 bucks each.I use new guards only when they a badly bent or broken. The knife block has a stud on it that is used to peen the rivets.

I'd look into converting to double haybine guards that require no ledger plates. I did that with my Allis Chalmers mower, and it worked very well.

Ledger plates are made to replace instead of the whole rockgaurd.Take one with you to the store and compare.

Try Shoup, they may have the ledger plates, or cheaper rock guards!

William,

I don't know anything about a Case sickle bar mower - never even seen one - so you know how valuable my observation is.

I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower. On mine, the ledger plates are replaceable. They are held into the rock guards with a single "rivet". I say "rivet" because it isn't long enough to go all the way through the rock guard, and it isn't peened on on end.

The "rivet" is easily removed with a punch. The rock guards have holes in the bottom that you put the punch into and drive the "rivet" out the top of the ledger plate.

Don't know how it works on a Case, but that's how my Ford works.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Can be done. Common procedure. Takes the long rivet.
