I have already posted this question on the garden tractor site but I thought someone over here might know the answer to my problem. I have an 8 HP Tecumseh engine on a Craftsman wood chipper. It will start on the first pull but will only run on full choke. As soon as you move the choke lever she wants to die. I have cleaned the air cleaner and sprayed the carb with carb cleaner. I don't see any jet adjustment. Any sugestions will be appreciated. Richard

no where will you ever find anything in writing that tells you to clean out a carb with wire. just the opposite. you never clean out the holes with wire. they are machined a certain size for a reason and besides, can you imagine trying to get a piece of wire out if it breaks off down in one of those holes.

Most likely one or more passages are plugged up. Disassemble the carburetor and use a piece of fine, stiff wire to clean out the passages.

Make sure the gasket between the carburetor and the engine has no leaks.

The main jet on the tecumseh engine is in the stem that the carb bowl is fastened to. Remove the capscrew, if it doesn't have an adjustable screw there, that holds the carb bowl on and spray carb cleaner up through the center of the stem. WalMart brand carb cleaner works great. May need to run a small wire through it afterwards. They usually get plugged up from old gas.

remove the carb, put it in a tub of carb cleaner over night. remove plastic, rubber parts first. no tub of cleaner. try a small engine shop or a local garage and see if they will clean it for you. cleaning it without dipping it for several hours is like not doing it at all. wash it with water and blow dry and all the passages you can see. there is a couple of real small ones you'll have to look for around the butter fly vavle (in most carbs) be sure to blow them out. clean your air filter or replace it if possible.
