Flail mower belt change

I have a Ford 917 flail mower, and was wondering if there is any downside to changing it over to a chain drive instead of belts, other than cost. It seems to me that it would require less adjustments and not much more maint. It's an 8 ft mower so what size chain would be best for longevity? Would #60 be heavy enough?

thanks,

I'd worry about the lack of slip if the rotor got caught up in something. Have belts been that much of a problem for you?

My Gleaner F had a chain drive cylinder.

My Gleaner F2 has a belt drive cylinder.

I would never, ever swap the belts for the chain. A real down-grade....

I'd think similar with the flail - you'd be going backwards.

see if you can replace the belt with a Kevlar belt, very tough and should last but will cost some extra cash. Used one on an Alamo shd88 behind a 1650 Olli, could slip the clutches but NEVER broke the belt, and it was cracked halfway through when I bought the mower.

There isn't really a problem with the belts per se, it's not being able to keep them at the proper tension. I have a problem with them slipping too much. Maybe I can rig up a automatic tensioner like what's on a car....
