Sickle mower help

Back 40 years ago my Grandfather clipped his pastures with a hay mower. To keep from clipping to short he used a taller skid on one end and a clipping wheel on the other. I have just acquired a IH sickle mower and would like to have the clipping wheel. I cant seem to find an outfit that makes them? Anyone built one?

Grew up with those mowers and I have seen those in farm catalogs a I have never saw one. We just used same setting for clipping pastures as for mowing hay.

Hello. I'm look for the same thing too! I'd like to run the mower a little high up so the guards don't pick up all the trash and debris.
Here is a link showing the weed attachment. The picture is about half way down. link http://www.dixieweb.com/mccormick-deering_no_7.htm

Here in western Colorado there were a lot of mowers with skid shoes.I have an old JD#5 out back with welded shoes. They were simply homemade. Mostly old leaf springs welded to the bottom of the bar to give a 2 lift.In fields that are 'water marked',the marks are cleaned each spring pulling up rocks and sods that can plug sections and break sections and gards.Never seen a wheel on the end. There were two or three shoes on the bar. You will most likely have to make your own. Remember, the old farmers simply didn't have the money, often things were not even available. So they got creative and made many things that we simply buy and now take for granted.

Many years ago I clipped my new CRP with a Model 27 IH mower at 5 inches. I looked all over for some type of outer wheel and found none. I ended up making mine. One thing I found out very early is you cannot use a tire with air in it. When you turn you will push the tire off the rim and the tire slides a lot when turning which will wear out the tire very quickly. I finally found a wheel off of an old air compressor with solid tread and a steel solid wheel. From there I simply put a solid plate and bolted it to the outer shoe area. The inner one I simply took a piece of 1 inch wide metal and bolted it to the inner shoe and to the sliding shoe to raise the inner end up. If I had pictures of the wheel I would post them but I don't right now until the snow leaves and I can get into my farm to take a picture of the wheel. Since then also I have sold that mower and bought a Model 100. That way I don't have to put up with the wooden pitman arm.

You're simply not going to find someone that makes one in this day and age. There is simply no market for such a thing. People in general don't clip their pastures with sickle bars anymore. They use big batwing mowers. If they do clip with the sickle bar, they already have a wheel, or make do without.

You've got three options:
1. Find an old one for sale. Good luck with that as most people would not know what one was to advertise it. Most likely it would be viewed as another piece of scrap and thrown in the pil. Best bet would be an old farm estate auction.

2. Make one yourself. You've already stated that your fabrication skills are not good.

3. Have someone make one for you. Just be aware that having one professionally made will probably cost more than you have in the entire mower.

Agreed. If you have little trees coming up clipping them off short is the best way to try to kill them if you aren't going to hand cut and spray.
