4400 elevator paddles

Hi guys. I have a jd4400 combine that a mouse or rat
chewed through some of my tailings return paddles. I
ordered new paddles. My question is can I just grind off the
old rivets and replace them with grade 5 bolts, washer and
lock nuts? I would like to do this on the combine without
taking the chain off. I appreciate your help.

Yes, I've ground off rivets and replaced paddles with bolts, washers and lock nuts and never had a problem. Sometimes it's easier to tie a rope to the chain and just pull it out, leaving the rope in the housing to pull chain back in, at least that way you can fully inspect it. I've never worked on a jd440 so not sure. I do remember pulling one of those chains out and having a dead rat land in my lap though!!
