How well does that work with the big Case 4x4? Can you just steer with the front wheels on those like the old 1200s? I know a guy who tried to chop with a 7520 Deere one wet year. He said that didn't work at all. He said that besides the chopper sliding in the mud, when he'd turn the tractor, the drawbar and chopper went the other way.

On the case we usually just steer with the front, but years ago we chopped with a 4-150 articulated white and had no issues and that was a wet year also. I would think the mud and the cutter sliding sideways would be more of the issue than the articualted tractor. The nice part of the 4wd is you can power through small wet spots without running down a bunch of corn to go around it. Only a few of us still chopping our own corn, seems most just hire it done, that way its done in a days time. To each there own.

How do the IH choppers work for you? An 881 showed at local consignment auction. Likely went for scrap as nobody uses a pull chopper around here any more. All Claas SP.

They have worked well for us the 881 is the same as an 830 just newer. Biggest problem with them is specialty parts like the gathering belts and rollers, no aftermarket parts available and dealers have raised
the price for one gathering belt from $300 to $1100. That is one advantage to going with a deere cutter, lots of aftermarket parts available to keep maintenance cost down.

$1100?! Time for me to start looking for a different chopper or at least another parts head. I put my last spare belt on this past fall and have one that's pretty rough. I watched one of those heads sell for $50 one time with 3 good belts on it.

Thats what they are trying to tell their customers, buy a differant brand, we are trying to get out of the business, thats my interpretation when they up the parts prices like that !

I think they've got a boat load of those belts and no market for them. The higher price they put on them, the bigger tax loss they can claim when they throw them all in the incinerator.

What really burns me is when the counter guy asks why I run such old equipment. Doesnt' matter which color dealer I go to, I have gotten this type of attitude, kind of frustrating.

If I get that question I respond by saying....you should be glad to sell parts for older equipment....shows that your line of equipment is well made and lats a long time...
