i tried looking for help with a john deere 853a rowcrop head n
didnt fare well.
i got to install new bevel gears on the hex shafts as well as the
upper drive gears. i got the shafts out on the ground. i see a snap
ring on bottom of shaft for the drive gears . my question ? how do i
get the shaft to slide down nuff to remove snaprings?
any help is much appreciated
 
Got to loosen or take the nuts off the top of shafts. I am replacing some vertical shaft bearings in mine right now. Keep me posted on the process. Tom
 
Ok will do.let me know about the shaft moval. i got parts printoff
from our friendly dealer and they show the sprockets on top with
no nut ,but same snapring as the bottom. i noticed a nut on top
also.
the hex shafts were badly rusted .i got a cheep cordless angle
grinder and a fine grit grinder disc. removed rust ,punch n
hammer n moved shafts removed rest of rust .shafts slid out easy.
a coupler went bad n noticed gears were all but goe. somebody
prior flipped gears and left the shims out causing faster wear so
it seemed. today when at the farm i will try to get pictures of the
parts pages dealer printed off for us
 
Don't worry about posting pictures, I have parts book. Do you have the head stood up on the feeder house back? I have a shipping stand to set mine on, makes what you are doing much easier.
Forgot to mention the lower snap ring comes off much better with lock ring pliers, if you replace any bearings on the vertical shafts there is an internal snap ring to take out. They are sometimes difficult to get started coming out as there is no place to get a bite on them. Sounds like you will need some tranny fluid acetone 50/50 mix to get in and around the rusty stuff, it is pretty thin will run through about anything. Tom
 
ok,we abanded the fix for now,cut standing soybeans and milo.
then back to the head n get the downed milo.
