K2 Problem developed today

I started picking more corn today with a 1978 Gleaner K2 diesel, the other day it was doing great but today i noticed an issue. I was picking with a
A238 corn head and as i went through the corn (about 1.7 mph) it was like you turned the thresher off, i could push the clutch in and wait about 10-15
seconds and it would catch up, speed back up and be fine for another 100 foot and then do it again, if i did one row at a time it did ok. I slowed
the ground speed way down and that didn't help any. I honestly don't know where or what to look for, my valves at the back are dripping some fluid, i
haven't had time to put the o-rings in between each valve, its been dripping for a couple months now but didn't seem to notice any lack of
performance.

This combine has the option where you can speed up or slow down the gathering chains and i've got the chains at full speed but they don't seem to be
turning as fast as they should, the gathering chains on my orange head on a Gleaner K i had went alot faster than what these do, any other way to
speed them up some? I'm thinking this could be leading to my issue above

Sounds like you need to tighten up the seperator clutch. Mine started that last year. Do you have a manual? It's pretty simple. The clutch is about half way back on the right side. Follow the linkage back. There's a ring that you turn to tighten it. I don't remember if there's a set screw in it or just what holds it. Seems like there was a metal disc cover that had to come off, but I can't say for sure.

ahhh ok, i didn't think about the separator clutch, i do have a manual so i'll take it with me to adjust it. Do you know how fast the chains should be turning? It might be fast enough but looks to be a little slow after seeing other A238 heads on youtube.

Even running slow my gathering chains are always fast enough on any combine. I agree the separator clutch is probably your best bet. Little capscrew holds a clip which keeps the ring from turning. Turn the ring counter clock wise, or to the left, and it unscrews from the cast clutch face, giving you a little more pressure when engaged. Maybe you've got a belt slipping somewhere too.

I was going to suggest checking the separator clutch as well. Slipping when too loose.

I never had a K of any version, is yours with an electric clutch, it could be a bad wire on that spinning clutch if so, doesnt make a full connection.

Hey Bob, I did like the book said but i could not get the ring to turn counterclockwise, i put a small punch against it and tapped lightly with a hammer but it still would not move. i sprayed the threads with PB Blaster and gonna try again monday. The lever in the cab doesn't snap in as good as it should so this must be the problem.

You removed the little screw and key I am sure.

If it hadnt been moved in years, it could take a bigger hammer..........

I got it to move, i backed it off one slot and now it snaps in and out like it should. I'm gonna try it out and see if that helped things
