john deere 45 with water in oil

1964 john deere 45 with a HA165 engine , are they known to have trouble, it runs fine, ran fine this summer in wheat and now in corn it is using water, could it be head gasket or cylinder orings, thanks Joe

I am guessing you need it now, I would put a bottle of Bars Leak in it and go to the field. I would run straight water in it(antifreeze will kill rod and main bearings quick) with an oil change.

Not known to cause trubble. That is sleeve deck engine and I don't know but I assume the are O ringe on bottom of cylinder that are probably starting to leak. The 145 version was on the round bacl and also was the 2010 tractor engine and the 115 engine was used on the 40 combine and 1010 tractor. The late SQ back used a 180 inch engine that is completely different. I know when we got the first round back the engine leaked oil but no water between block-deck plate and head. Supposedly overhauled just before we got it. Found out the bolts were tourked to only half what they were supposed to be. 2 round back 45 with the 145 engine, one SQ back with the 165 engine and neweest SQ had a 180 engine. The earlier round back did not use a deck plate engine. But the engine could have been replaced with any of them so without serial number of engine and parts book hard to tell how it is made.
