JD 6620 Trans. Screen

I have a question about installing the transmission screen.

I installed it with the open end with the collar towards the drain plug. I pushed the screen in, then put in the plug.

I wondered why there was a rubber wedge/gasket just inside the opening of the screen. It did not seem the screen would fit onto the shoulder of the plug.

Then when putting things away I noticed the parts diagram has the shoulder of the screen away from the plug (picture attached.) Perhaps the open end with the rubber insert goes in first?? doesn't make sense since the closed end would be towards the plug which has a tube/hole through it. A little confused:)
Thanks! Rich

Rich, I have a Tech Manual for a 6600 (with the same basic transmission) and it says NOTHING about how to install the screen and shows the same drawing you posted, so no help there.

I've worked on a few of those transmissions, but it's probably 30 years since I did the last one so memory is of NO help, either!

It only makes sense, though, that the open end of the screen has to face the ''drain plug'' which is also the pickup point for the transmission lube pump.

Is it possible the ''rubber part'' is a flexible magnet intended to pick up metal particles out of the transmission oil?

It isn't shown in the Parts Catalog or the Tech Manual, so it must be considered part of the screen or something that someone has added in the past.

Wore Out-

Thanks for your comments. When I took out the screen I thought something was torn up (that piece of rubber came out separately) so ordered a new screen. (Also, the screen came out separate from the plug with the opening towards the plug if I recall correctly. Then thinking about it I thought there was no guarantee the last guy put it in correctly:)

The new screen has that same piece of rubber just inside the opening. That is an interesting thought about it being magnetic. I will check it tomorrow to see if that is the case. When I put the new screen in...everything seemed to go together okay so will leave it as is unless I hear otherwise from someone.

Thanks!! Rich

Also, thanks for explaining the drain plug and attached tube are the pickup point for the transmission pump...I was wondering what that was all about:)
