John Deere 55 Diesel Combine

Even though it might be rare, the 248 is a knock against it. Those engines have a somewhat medicore to horrible reputation in the 2010 tractor. The later 303s were better.

I restarted an 95 hilo diesel few years ago that had not ran for years. The 248 is a hard cold starter, but it sounds very very nice. If I was close, i would not let that go to scrap, altough I much prefer very early vertical steering wheel 55s. If engine let go, i think that a chevy 292 or perkins 354 should fit.
I have seen one 95 converted to a Deutz 6l812 air cooled. Everything can be done.

Are you sure it is a 248 as I thought the 217 was the only engine for many years gas or diesel until late ones had the 303 engine

55/95s used the 217 gas or 248 diesel until 67'. To add confusion the roundback 105s and first year squareback 105s used the 248 gas or 404 diesel.

Yes, 105 with the 248 have it wind up very high to gain horsepower (3000 rpm???) And they use a gearbox at the end of flywheel housing to reduce pulleys speed. Crazy setup.

I love 105s roundback!

Round back 105s are great for a collectable now but weren't that good of a combine back then. That 248 had issues staying together that JD acknowledged and I've seen a number of them with Chevy 327 transplants. The header was obsolete and at 22ft the grain had trouble
staying on the header with the short cutter bar to auger distance. And the flat belt was at its limits trying to power a 50 separator. JD square back 105s was a huge advancement over the round backs.

I got one of the last 105's, i think that's got a 360 gas,its got plenty of power, use a fair amount of fuel although!
