Couple of F2 questions: Chaffer and variable speed

First the chaffer: Anybody else get stems stuck in between the chaffer and shoe housing, in that gap? I get some in there and it causes material to pile up at the front of the chaffer. I don't see anything in the parts book that indicates a small shield to keep that from happening.

Now the variable speed: I've adjusted the variable lever in the cab. Adjusted because it got where it wouldn't speed up. Even now, slow to speed up, but slows very quickly. Is that usual? Seems to work even better with raising that lever up when pulling back to slow up, though it may mess with my header height.

You have the older F2 with the 4 rods going back to manually control the valves, not the newer electric controls obviously.

Those can be fussy to adjust.

Id guess your hydraulics are a tad slow and its slow to compress the sheave on the belt, but quick to let the spring open the sheaves?

For lack of a better term there should be some kind of "weather strip" in the shoe between the upper fixed part and the lower moving part.

The variable speed on my 1981 F2 is also very slow, especially to speed up. If you look at the oil lines they are pretty small and I wonder if that contributes to the slow response. My 1968 EIII variable speed is extremely responsive compared to my F2. Before the F2 I wondered why everyone raved about hydro's vs. variables...then I found out...Oh and I bought a 1980 F2 hydro this fall to go with my 1981 variable - so now I know exactly. Ha.
