Deere 42 round and square back?

What are the differences between a round back and a square back 42 combine other than the rear sheet metal? I know on the bigger machines they changed a good bit but was told that there were no changes on the 42 as it was close to being discontinued.I always thought a 42 square back would be a neat small combine. I started farming with a late 45 and now have a 95 and a 105. Tom

My info says they went to top drive elevators on the squarebacks, grain tank held more and the unloading auger had more clearance because they added an elbow to it. The cell grate was also added. To me it looks like they got some of the same changes the bigger models did.

Tom,

There were a lot of differences as the one we restored was a round back and a lot of the parts were not interchangeable. The biggest were the cylinder bars were not the same as the square backs had three spiders on the cylinder shaft and the round backs had only two. The bolts were welded in the new bars and were sold in pairs of rights and lefts and you installed them opposite of each other as to maintain balance. Top drive elevators with roller chain drive rather than the belt along the lower left side of the machine. The chopper mounting and drive was a little different but the chopper that was on that combine was beyond repair so we just left the chopper off. Virtually no parts available for one today.
