Hw much does john deere charge to replace blown head gasket and how many hours to do the job?
We sent the 9770 to jd to replace blown head gasket.then charged $999.47 and 44 hours labor.
I figured 5 to 8 hours. Head gasket set cost $160.00

was your combine gone that many days? 44 hours doesnt equal much time per hour....1000 - 160 = 840 / 44 = 19.09 an hour, im betting 4.4, but either way, they did the head gasket for 1000 bucks, i dont know that i would complain much, cause if they are a 19 bucks an hour, i would be sending everything to them haha

If I read his post right it was $1000 for parts and 44 hours labor. Making it a very big bill. I figure 40 hours labor doing an overhaul on a 4020. That includes removal, tear down,2 trips to machine shop, reassembly &going through the clutch and engine breakin on a dyno. Tom

Sounds about right
I priced that same job plus new injectors and it was around 20,000
There is a lot to these new engines
It s not in any way like a 4020
A 4020 is like a lawn mower engine compared to these new engines
just bite the bullet and pay it
Still cheaper and it s a better machine than a new one

Dugger,

on average thats a 10 year old machine, that engine is not that much different to warrant 10 grand to do a head gasket and there is a lot of them on tractorhouse, which i always think is high in general, for around 100k, so, 1/10 was just spend on a head gasket, or in your case, 20k for a gasket and 6 injectors? its a 9L (549 ci) engine, granted it may be a bit tougher to get to with everything around it, but wow.....its still 10 years old and now its better than a new one? buy that statement, spending 100 bucks on a 95 would make it better than a 9770...guess i am not following that logic either

after that bill i only think you could afford a 22 shell to bite....im not big on that

Yes I agree with you flock
But reb has the proof he spent 14000 with no injectors
So that s the proof
It takes the better part of a day taking shields
Off just to get to what you are doing
Been there done that

Tlock
I ve had both machines
The 9000 series are just built better in my opinion
The newer one is noisier dirtier and is made cheaper
Than the 9000 series
The ladders on new ones are harder to climb
It s just not as good
I didn t spend 20,000 on mine but that s what the dealer wanted
To do the job
I traded mine but wish I would have kept the old one

When you take things to town be sure to have vasoline In one hand and novocane in the other I don?t care who?s name is on the building.

it will take more than 8 hours for sure. and it will take almost an hour to torque head down properly.

once upon a time deere had product improvement program (pip) where they pulled the heads on those 9.0 litre engines to check liner protrusion. John Deere was paying 13 or 15 hours and the mechanics said it took at least 24. Ive done one and I think it took about 30 hours to clean check everthing.

I hope more than anything they checked liner protrusion and surfaced head . Head gaskets don't just fail without cause. Also all new head bolts are required.

if you think your dealer is getting to you ,you can always do the work yourself. I do

Paul
