Corn Picking Issues

I started getting things ready to combine another field of corn, this field has Pioneer 1197 in it. For some reason the Gleaner K wasn't getting all the kernels off the cob, i know its not the combine cause i just did a field of Dekalb and every cob was clean. The pioneer had the same size ears and was at 17% which is dryer than the dekalb was. I tried getting the kernels off some of the cobs and it was not easy by hand. Anyone ever had this problem?? I do know there will not be any Pioneer next year!!

I had some corn once that was so tough that it blew the stone door open! Anything is possible. Brand, variety, weather, soil, fertility, planting date, drainage, etc. and any number of other variables all have an effect. You just have to find what works good for you. And it might well not be what works for your neighbor!

About 96 day Pioneer is what always seems to work best here. I just did some 99 day and the test weight was 52#. There won't be any more of that.

Some hybrids are just tougher to shell by nature. Try lowering the cylinder and or increase cylinder speed. Are the rasp bars in good shape? Those Gleaners will harvest anything, sometimes just need a bit of fine tuning.

What is your cylinder clearance set at? What is the diameter of the cobs that don't have all the kernals shelled off? My cobs run about 1" and I have always ran my cylinder at 3/4 (after zeroing and resetting my gauges). I don't have any issues with kernals not shelled and almost all the cobs come out back whole. This is on my 1981 F2.

How many concaves and in what position? I run 3 channel bar concaves in 1 (rock door), 3 and 5 positions. Cylinder speed about 475-500.

I change setting almost every field or variety for the uptimumn performance., so you may have to close down or speed up the cylinder to get the corn off.

tighten her down just touch or speed her up,thats pretty typical in our area each hybrid sometimes you have to fine tune, just part of the business, for me now thou I have it all cash rented out, best thing I done only wish done it few years earlier

I remember them having a variety about 40 years or so ago that you couldn't beat off the cob with a hammer. Gary Williams had some of it in. All his Gleaner F would do is break the cobs in to little pieces with the kernels still stuck to them. Would have been a good variety to pick with a New Idea picker I guess.
