This tractor is for sale here in Kansas, but no mention of the combine. The tractor and combine are identical to the pair that my dad had when I was a youngster. I spent a lot of hours riding in the grain bin while dad was cutting wheat.

Nice photo. An uncle had a combine like that, John Deere No. 17. I worked for him and pulled the combine with his Case LA tractor.

That is an AWESOME picture!! Any idea of how wide the sickle bar is? I can't get a reference point to make a guess,15' maybe?

They were available in 12 or 16 ft cut. My uncle's machine had the 12 ft platform because back then (1940s and 1950s) all combines had windrow pickups. All grain was windrowed because weed control was not the greatest and green weeds needed to dry prior to going through the combine. The good grain was also a little green in some low spots in the fields where there was a bit more moisture and swathing helped that too.

Normally this was a 2 man outfit - one on tractor and one on combine. Some guys (my Dad included) made a one man setup for these. Dad's was a John Deere No. 5A, same styling as this No. 17, but a smaller cylinder width. I ran ours when I was about 18. You WERE BUSY running that alone! The one man combine setup was very similar to the factory one man setup that Deere supplied for grain binders - the operator riding on the binder and controlling the tractor and binder. VERY BUSY on that too!
