Why was there no K3 Gleaner?

A neighbor and I were talking about the Gleaner F2's, M2's and L2's being upgraded to the 3 series and we wondered why the K2 was dropped? Both of us ran F2's, he now runs a M2 and I run a F3 and R52. I remember seeing several K2's around our area 15-20 years ago. Just curious why the model was dropped and not upgraded to the next series like the bigger combines?

Probably for the same reason all companies eventually drop the smallest combine in the lineup as time goes on. Lack of demand from fewer smaller farmers. Gleaner did good to get the K series to go that long since JD dropped the 3300 in the mid 70s.

I was told by a older gleaner dealer it was due to less sales of that model.I own a 1976 M and need to travel aways to see another older gleaner around here.Everything is green or newer Caseih.

I?m surprised the F was mad as long as it was.

The 70s was an era of massive expansion get bigger or get out of the way farming.

Then the 80s came and the small conservative farms hunkered down and made do with what they had, the big outfits went broke didn?t buy for a year got through bankruptcy and bought everything new bigger and better than ever.

No one was buying small new equipment. That was a dead end.

One has to look at the economic times back then.

By then, the price difference would have been so little, the extra capacity would justify the bigger machine. And like everyone says, low demand.

I remember reading an article once, I want to say in Farm Show, about someone planning to build Gleaner L4 and K4 combines in Mexico. They were looking to fill the need for both the small farmers needing a small combine, and custom harvesters who swore by the L/L2/L3 series. The specs were going to be the same as the last K2s and L3s, except for using Cummins engines. I don't think the project ever got off the ground.

Well, they did make a number of L4 combines, using a Cummins diesel. Mostly the same, the cabs were slightly different, but never heard of a later K3 or K4. Google L4 Gleaner and some images come up. Ben
