John Deere 4400

Trying to change the primary countershaft belts that run off of the Engine powershaft that is on the left side, on the very end of the shaft is a hydraulic pump , it has a large nut that I have backed out which reveals where the shaft of the hydraulic pump goes into the engine powershaft, does anyone know if this threads out and which way or is there some sort of key or spline to deal with, service manual doesn't cover this.
THanks

The hydraulic pump is threaded into the end of the primary counter shaft. The pump shaft has flats on it for a wrench. There is a special wrench for this is is just a flat piece of heat treated steel with a slot the correct size. IRC the flats are 5/8 apart. The pump threads are right handed. The nut you threaded out needs to be retightened. You do not need to loosen it to remove the pump shaft.

Your service manual does cover this in the hydraulic pump removal section.

I have a Snap On adjustable wrench that is slightly thicker than the normal ones I usually can tighten it on the flats and hit the handle with a two pound hammer and get the pump shaft to come lose. Some of them are stuck too tight to get out even with the special wrench. It often is quicker to just drain the hydraulic reservoir. Then take the suction and pressure hoses off the pump. Then just slide your belts over the pump.

P.S. while your in there replace the unloading auger drive belt. Even better loop a second one over the shaft and tie it back out of the way. This way you have already installed you spare for the next time.

Thank You , this helps greatly.
