I looked at the 55sb today. It's a 'corn special'.Exactly what does that mean? It has a 313 cornhead. It's an average machine.Nothing remarkable about it.there is a lot of wear in the auger bottoms and the unloading auger bottom elbow is in poor shape. If he will accept $1500,I will probably try to buy it. However,I really don't need it,just want it.LOL If I really needed it'that would be different.Stay tuned...?? Steve

It should have a variable speed cylinder if its a corn special. Also the unloading auger might be perforated on the bottom. And I think they used a deep tooth chaffer. Corn special, EB special and so in were more off a marketing ploy then anything. Our corn special 55 cuts wheat just fine without any mods. The corn might be somewhat collectible. If I?m not mistaken I don?t think they made too many of those and I think they are a narrow row header. They were an economy header compared to the 5 series headers.

If you could figure out how to make it thresh canabis seed from that pot those guys want to plant on your place you?d be on your way to becoming a billionaire I wonder if the combine manufacturers will come out with a Cannabis seed special can you imagine if that thing ever caught fire ? Hippies everywhere coming to get baked and roast marshmallows

Mine has a 313 corn head. 30” does. Works pretty good. Corn special probably has a rasp bar cylinder. The variable cylinders were only made in 1969. Has nothing to do with being a corn special. I have seen Edible Bean models with that.

The variable speed cylinder became an option in 1968. It might have been an option late 67' but for sure it was out in 68'. I've seen combines out here in wheat country with the variable speed cylinder so yes its not crop specific. But my info makes it sound like if you ordered a Corn Special it was standard equipment.

Don?t quote me on the 67? date. I only say that because we
have a 1967 95 with provisions for a hole to be punched out
on the console right were the cylinder tachometer would go.

I sometimes wish mine did not have it as in 220 bu corn that is the weakest link. You learn to watch the cylinder speed as it will start to slip when loaded heavy. Tom

They didn't have 220 bu corn back then either. The whole thing is really just an afterthought and probably a step backwards in serviceability because it is a way more complicated drive verses the chain off the beater drive. The cylinder is still chain driven. The chain just drives a shaft which drives the cylinder shaft.
