JD 55 engine

My 1967 square back has the 303 engine with no issues so far. If need be would it be worth putting a 217 in it as there are several parts machines available with a decent 217. Or is there a diesel that might fit if it ever needs an engine?

I believe someone on here has already switched out a gas engine in their 95 for a 329?? So 329s and maybe 359s should fit. 55s and 95s used the same engine so am assuming that would work on your 55. Even though it would probably be more expensive, I would do that before going backwards with a 217. Our 1969 55 has a diesel 303 and it gets a little anti freeze in the oil after sitting for a year so I just change the oil every fall. We also have a 1967 95 with a 303 gas that was overhauled at around 1,200 hrs for the same issue.

Mine was overhauled in the late 80’s before I bought it. It has around 3600 hours on it so you never know. Was it another combine that used the 329?

I have changed the 303 gas out of my 95 with a 329 diesel. Easy to do with the parts you now have. The housing bolt right up. You will need to make some throttle linkage and some air cleaner pipe. The 329 was used in 4400 and early 6600 combines so there are a good many to be had. You will soon save enough on fuel to pay for the change over as a 303 gas when worked is very thirsty. The 217 engine you mentioned I believe used a sleeve deck like the 2010's did? You would be impressed with the power difference. Tom

Thanks for the info fellas. I will keep my eye out for a 329.
