I have a gleaner f2 hydro 4x4 diesel it seems to really pull down on engine rpm and lack power when taking it down the road in 3rd gear it pulls down to around 1800 rpm at best when even on mainly flat ground. Is this normal, can never open hydro up unless going on a more down grade.

Bob did not some of the F2s have a four turbo cylinder motor???? It sticks in my mind that some of the later ones had a smaller motor.

Earlier F/F2 diesels were the 6 cyl. 301 180/185/190 tractor engine. Later ones had the 4 cyl 200 turbo/aftercooled 6080 engine. Same basic engine. The 4 cyl. was counterbalanced. My experience the 4 cyl had more power than the 6 cyl, as long as it was wound up. AC got more torque rise out of that engine than any other.

I had a long shoe 1979- 95 hp 4 cyl diesel with turbo. Ran it almost 20 years. Son has it now on his hobby farm. Ran about a gal/ac.

The 4 cylinder engine will carry it down the road in 4th gear at 18 mph when running correct, first place to look is the sediment bulb strainer while it is off blow back thru the sediment bulb into the tank with compressed air be sure to remove the fuel cap first, then remove the fuel filter with the fuel level in the tank above the filter housing fuel should free flow, if not check the line from the sediment bulb to the filter housing ,replace the fuel filter with a new one air bleed it and try it again, while a wide open throttle check your turbo boost pressure gage it should be around 15 psi. if the engine is running right one other thing you said it is 4wd if there is anyway to disengage the drive hubs on the rear end try that if possible.

I have no experience with that set up as the F2's right here were gear drive, 2WD. But given the torque rise of that engine, I would think it should perform better. There is a plastic screen over the outlet of the fuel tank. Someone with not too big of an arm can reach straight down through the filler hole and snap it loose and check it out. Maybe you know about that. I assume you've cleaned the sediment bowl screen, and changed the filter. If your injector pump hasn't been over hauled, I'm amazed, as it was many years ago that the F2 I had, developed the famous governor ring disintegration issue. It would lose power, and quit! Since it's not smoking, your turbo is probably alright, but it wouldn't hurt to take off the intake hose and see how much play the rotor has. Likewise probably not an issue, but you can check over the intake manifold and make sure no plugs have loosened and fallen out! I saw that once on an M2, but it smoked really bad. Funny thing was, that engine was overhauled for the sake of a missing plug! They did find some metal filings in the cooling areas of the block. Maybe it was put together in a hurry! I think AC paid for that one.

Good chance you have injection pump trouble. When the flex ring begins to fail power loss is first symptom, then starting/dying repeatedly is next. You can confirm next time it's running sluggish by loosening the two screw timing cover on the side. If engine revs up normally WITH the fuel leak, then slows down again with the screws tight, pump needs serviced. Had two AC combine pumps in for repair last fall for the same issue.

This is a 3spd machine I ran it hard yesterday in corn all day and the rpm never drops below 2300. I am doing more road traveling now than before as I have picked up more ground. I have owned machine for about 7 years. Only place it lacks power is going down road have not checked turbo yet

Are there any lights glowing on the "overhead display"? Our F2 will start with a flickering amber light-steady amber- then RED !! That's when we know it's time to clean the sediment bowl screen, the "in tank" filter has been long gone.

My F3 hydro (not 4wd) was the fastest of my lineup on the highway. Bought it 110 miles from home, drove it home, 20mph. Did it in 2 stages, never slowed down.

What shape is your hydro in?

Paul
