John Deere 42 combine

well I finally got my 205 corn head for my John Deere 42 combine The combine has never had a corn head on it so I have to add the drive chain and sprocket's to drive the corn head has anyone ever added a corn head to there combine thanks for any advise or thought's Howard

Make sure you have the filler plates in the cylinder. A lot of combines never had them if they only did small grains.

The operaters manual for the corn head should give you all the info you need as well as some close idea on settings. If your corn is fairly dry you should not need the fillerbars. My first 95 had them but my 105 and my second 95 do not and I have had no problems yet in corn. If you do add the fillerbars make sure to remove them before doing small grain. Neighbor did severe damage to a machine by leaving them in and having one come loose in small grain. I had a square back 42 many years ago but sold it before I ever used it. Tom

If you do ever decide you want a set you should be able to get ones from any 5 series combine and have a welding shop cut them to the proper length with a plasma cutter. Redrill a few holes and you would be good. Tom
