John Deere Model 42 combine

I am looking at a model 42 pull behind combine, 9ft grain head. It appears in very good condition, paint is original and still good, always shedded. Guy is asking $1800.00 but said he will come down, I'm thinking $1000.00 max. What price do you guys think would be fair? I only do about 5 or 6 acres of oats a year.

What would be your other options, choices?? Deere is pretty god about parts, but many aftermarket sources are also available. But as with anything old, there will be some you need of a donor one. If it is in good to excellent condition, I would pay a g for it, MAYBE even a little more, depending on scrap price in your area. Not a good measuring stick, but it is out there, You'll have a fun weekend combining your acreage with it.
The other way to look at it is just like with land, they don't make them anymore!
If you are not interested, email is open. I would be interested in the machine if not too far.
Ralph in OK.

Scrape price around here ia about $200 a ton, I think the combine is about 2 ton. Other options are a few self propelled for sale, a decent deere 45 with dual drive wheels and 13 ft head, engine runs good guy is asking the same, 1800.
I am located in the U.P of Michigan right on Lake Superior and the Wisconsin boarder so it would be a long haul for you! My son and I both enjoy the older J.d. tractors and equipment, We have a few 2 cylinder tractors, 3010, 4010, 24t baler, 336 baler, 1209 haybine so that's the reason I am looking at this one.

I've got a 42 that likely has more options but might need a little work on the grain tank. Wouldn't consider selling for $1000, $1800 might consider the issue. Guess it depends on how anxious he is to get rid of it.

If it is as nice as you say you can pay more than a $1000.Pass it up and buy a cheaper one that set out or is rough and that needs work? You can't pay to much for good shed kept original equipment.Head to the field with junk that breaks down and the crop loss will soon be more than $800.Good shed kept equipment is fun to operate and you will look forward to using it.We have two extra sharp 95 combines that I paid more for the hauling than the combines, but after 7 or 8 years without a breakdown I am not sorry that I spent what I did. What is $800 more over the course of ten to fifteen years?

Sorry but here in central Illinois if a quality 42 becomes avail they just plain sell for more than $1000. Just plain too handy for collectors to use at a harvest domonstration.

Reading the others' post, I think you have a pretty good idea what a good price would be....
Yes, it is a "little" far, but still interested if you aren't.

Rod, where exactly are you located at? I'm in Ontonagon.

If the 45 with duals and a 13' head is the one in Mason, Wi on CL I think I looked at it a few years back and it needed some work.

Down around green bay there has been a pull-type JD of some sort on Craigslist for the last year or so for sale. Just saw it the other day but can't seem to locate it at the moment.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I had no idea the older combines were going for that much. Guess I am out of touch with current prices. I talked to the guy and am going look at it Friday morning.. Guess I will have to go higher on my offer if I decide to get it. Ralph I will get some pictures and post them if I pass on it but right now if it's in the shape he says I think it will be coming home with us.

Yes that's the ome. I haven't looked at it because I would prefer a pull type. If I get this on I will most likely be putting an Oliver 525 with 10ft head up for sale. Works good, motor needs a tune up and possibly a water pump, runs warm. I am over by Ironwood.

Ok, I can let you know. Probably wouldn't sell till I'm finished with the oats this year just in case the pull behind needed something. Price would be very reasonable since we are running out of storeage room. Send me an email and I will give you an idea of price I have in mind.
