The ED-40 made by AC in England was the most "numb & useless" tractor built here - and was the downfall off the AC company who were building ecxellent combines, grain drills & balers at the time!
Powered by the Standard Motor Company 4 cylinder 40HP diesel engine which was the worst diesel engine to start. 4F + 1R and hi-low. Early models has up & down 3 point with lever under left of steering wheel opposide the throttle. The later ones had depth & position control on right side of seat which didnt work. The operators postion was a struggle to gain access to, and the transmission tunnel was lever with your knees.
The tractors size was 50% larger than the equivalent Ford, MF & IH tractors in that power band - it was underpowered. It had high underframe clearance for mid mounted hoes - the only redeeming feature, and they were mainly sold as hoeing tractors in the sugar beet growing areas in eastern England.
When AC closed thier British factory, all the parts were transfered to their factory in France which only lasted a few years. AC in USA directed that ALL parts were to be destroyed, so parts are not available today. The value of ED-40 are 33% of equivalent Ford MF & IH tractors of that era.
