Acceptable wear on corn head

I got a 443 cornhead to use on my 4420. I was lubing it up and checking it over. Everything feels fine except for one of the shafts which drives a gathering chain. The shaft which sticks up from a gearbox and has a sprocket on it to drive a gathering chain has some wobble in it. It is not a lot, but I don't want something to fail and cause more damage than necessary. How hard is the bearing on this shaft to get to? Is this a signal there is significant wear on other parts of the head too? Everything else seems pretty tight. Thanks for the help.

You have to remove the gearbox and take it apart. The allen head screws in the deck plate come out easy if they are heated first. Not hard to do. The biggest trick is to make sure the stalk rolls are timed right when you put them back on the gearbox. You're Deere dealer will have the parts as this gearbox was used on new heads up until just a few years ago. Jim

Oh yeah, got ahead of myself there. If there is slop in the shaft it's time to take it apart. You can either fix it before harvest starts when you have the time or do it when it goes completely out during harvest.

That shaft has a gear made on the other end. If it is loose than you need to fix it now not later. It runs on a triple gear that is expensive to replace. If it has been ran long the triple gears is probably shot already. The entire gear case has to be removed and disassembled. It is not that hard to do. Just make sure and take the time to shim the bearings right going back together.
