All Crop 66 and corn

I have an all crop 66 that I am going to put back into service next year for wheat and oats and milo......just got to get teh drapers replaced. I have bought an oliver#5 for picking corn and was just wondering if the all crop could be used to shell it out? I know they made a corn head for the 66 so my asumption is I can throw the ear corn onthe draper and it will work...........will it?

Its funny - this question came up a couple of weeks ago. I can't remember how that was answered but the availablity of the corn head was brought up. I have a 66 and it seems the rubber on the concaves wouldn't hold up to shelling corn but I would like to see the final answer also. I pick ears and shell them when needed and my old sheller isn't going to out live me (I think).

It could work without a Corn Head! BUT; The reel probably needs to be removed, & doing this could cause a lot of crop loss if the ground speed isnt kept up. Next problem is everything you cut goes into the cylinder where-as cornheads separate the ears from the stalk. I envision lots of stopping & very slow travel which will let the stalks fall forward on the ground. & if the ears fall off the stalk easy then it will roll down the canvas to the ground. As the upper canvas grabs the stalks its probably going to shake them to no end with a lot of ears be lifted above the lower canvas while being constantly beat by the cylinder. Also I think You need to add "Filler Plates" between the cylinders, or You get a tremendous amount of loss at the cylinder. Someone correct me if I'm wrong Please! about the plates! I did it 15 years ago with a "90" but thats an auger type head. A very different animal!!! Scotty

Here ya go. I also had to wonder if the cylinder in a 66 could stand up to shelling corn

So they did have a corn head. Knowing that then I do bet that it will shell corn if you just throw the picked ears onto the canvas. Does anybody know the setting for corn? maybe experiement I guess. I suppose filler plates would be needed but does anybody know where I could get some?

I don't know the availability of MM or JD corn shellers where you are at, but if it were me I'd be looking for the correct machine to do the job right, unless you are looking at shelling 100 bushels or less. You could even rig up a sheller attachment from a New Idea picker to throw corn in to shell it and do a better job with less waste. Just my 2 cent's worth.

(quoted from post at 14:24:31 10/08/09) Try looking under 'maize' in the op manual.

I did see that in the op manual and that is what got me wondering.......now I do know that corn from the 50's is different in terms of yield and such form the corn of today. But other than that i think it might work.......I only plan on about 3 acres of corn next year so won't be too bad and first few bushels ran through should tell the story..........

well, here is a twist......I found this on Ebay and bought it.

So there was a Corn head for the 66 and so I bought this manual.........now to search for that elusive beast.........this is going to be fun.........

Well My dad tired shelling corn off the stalk it didn't work good. He and grandpa even tried building a larger reel for the head and no success.
They traded the combine for a Gleaner(E) in 1963 and corn head in 1965. Picked the ten acres by hand till then. So now you have one story with the results of trying.

you can do corn with an all-crop, the header and reel need to be lifted as high as they can go so the header is cutting just below the ear on the stalk. the cylinder bars need to run straight instead of the spiral they are set at for grain. yes you will need filler bars in the cylinder and the cylinder is raised and moved back. i have 2 66's with cornheads.

Well all that sounds easy to do....of course I would love to find a corn head.....not many made...

where can a guy get filler bars for the all crop?
