FOund out while cleaning up the 1400 that the left straw walker broke just behind the front crankshaft on the last few acres of corn. Luckily, it doesn't look like much of anything else was damaged. My questions are: 1) Is there any good way of getting at the bolts to remove it from the front crank, short of crawling in and laying on the sieves? and 2) Should I even think about repairing (welding) the walker, or would the extra weight from the welds and reinforcing patches make it too heavy in relation to the other walkers? Never had a repair like this to do before. Thanks for any help.

Although I don't know much about New Hollands I have been involved in replacing some walkers on others. You can lay a piece of plywood over the chaffer and lay on it and I wouldn't even consider trying to repair a broken walker. Find a used one and put it in. It's not a real bad job in the off season.

Thanks. I kinda thought it might be more trouble than its worth to fix the old walker- keeping the right length and everything. Have to take a look at some slavage yards now, I guess....
