John Deere starter

I recently rebuilt the engine on my 425 John Deere. When I went to start it for the first time I ground on the starter for awhile but it wouldn't start. I put a little gas in the carburetor and tried to start it and it ran for a short while but now the starter runs every time I turn the key to "on" not to "start" and somehow the brake pedal safety switch got bypassed in the process. So you can turn the key on now and not have to push the pedal or turn the key to start. I don't understand what happened..Anybody got an answer?

If starter has a a quick disconnect terminal on large bolt that connects to starter motor & a quick disconnect for sol coil, try reversing these connections, may have eng ign lead connected direct to starter, feeding power to starter when ign sw turned on,bypassing all safety sw's

All it has on the starter solenoid is the battery cable and a smaller wire with a ring terminal on the end plus a red wire on the small side of solenoid which was not removed during overhaul. I tried to remove the ring terminal wire from the solenoid + terminal but then I had nothing so I put it back. I had three other plugs that I marked and removed then put back per the marking. I'll look again in the morning and maybe disconnect those plugs again and see if I can come up with the right combination. Thanks

I took a quick look tonight at the starter again and there is no quick disconnect but it is as you said that when I turn on the ignition it goes directly to the starter but it must do it somewhere else besides at the starter. I'll try to find a wiring diagram somewhere and see if I can trace down the short.
