spitting-sputtering

I have a yardman 15hp lawn tractor. I mowed with this and and it started spitting and sputtering like the carb had dirt in it. I cleaned the carb and it ran fine afterwards. Mowed about 1/3 acre.
Next time I mowed it took about 2 minutes to start doing the same thing. And I got a bit of grey smoke. I cleaned it again with absolutely no results and this time shot a big cloud of smoke
out the front. I immediately pushed it to the garage and it has sat since. Meanwhile leaking oil. I know little about these engines and am a bit discouraged about taking anything apart. I have done 2 strokes but never a 4 stroke.

Check the crank-case breather! It should be on the block somewhere. Or the oil fill tube might have a breather made in it. you should post the make of engine, so the learned heads in these columns can tell how to maybe fix it.

You may have more than one problem,if eng a vert shaft briggs ohv eng, check that valve cover gasket isn't leaking & dripping on muffler or a bad/leaking head gasket, this will cause white/gray smoke from front of eng, also check valve clearances(a common problem on briggs ohv eng)IF eng a briggs ohv the best thing to do is goto local dealer, briggs website or ebay & buy a service/repair manual(pn272147)for 1 cyl ohv engines.

Check oil level on dipstick,if same over full, smell oil on stick,if you smell gas in oil, then carb float valve or fuel pump(if eng has)is allowing gas to leak into crankcase, diluteing oil/raising level & oil passing rings or excess gas/oil mix in crankcase being blown out breather into carb,if this is happening locate source of leak-by & repair,THEN replace oil & filter, also goto link below & download a service/repair manual for your eng or goto ebay & buy a cd with all kohler manuals on it,view/print manual for your eng from cd,as I said in 1st reply, you may have more than 1 problem or created a new one.

Just worked on a Deere lt155 with the same engine, I was told these have coil problems. Replaced it now runs fine. BUT make sure to clean the coil mounts for a good ground. I have run into that alot.

Thaks a ton you guys. Got service manual from kohler and am just starting to examine the engine. Even though the season is almost over for mowing. Thank goodness for 2 craftsman push mowers. I will try and post results but am tight for cash at the time and am not too sure how long it will be. But I thank you again for advising me on what to look for.
