Lawn Chief high wheel mower w/B&S engine

I have been given an old Lawn Chief walk behind mower with a B&S 5 hp engine. This is the high wheel version with engine located near the user and a belt drive (similar to that of a high wheel trimmer) to the large pulley at the front. I managed to get the engine running but need some help and information please. I was not able to find anything on the internet after an exhaustive search.

I need help with the following:

1. How do you replace belt?
2. How much oil (30wt) does this engine take?
3. There appears to be some kind of piston/spring under the front large pulley which is seized - anyone have any information on this and where to get new one? There is a braking system to stop front blade continuing to run and this is jammed on.
4. Second of the idler pulleys rusted solid - any source for getting new one?

Any pdf or other on line file for manual on this old mower. I think once I get it going it will be a beast so hoping to use it on rough pasture work.

Any information would be very useful.

Thank you,

Lee

You fill the engine with oil until the oil is level with the top of the fill plug. Fill from empty is about 3/4 of a quart. The idlers should be available from almost any L/G parts suppier. Go to someone local so you can compare the parts. The spring loaded clutch? on the main pulley. It could be a slip clutch of some type.

Did you try MTD,I was looking for something about Lawnchief a few days ago and came across some info that they were aquired by MTD.If you have a model number,I have microfiche for Lawnchief but I don't remember a mower like you describe maybe I can find something.

lawn cheif is a True Value brand, at one time made by them in ILL paint plant. They had stampiing for all the decks and shovels and such too. Even had tractors for awhile. Think that is all done now. Back in late 70's and 80's manufacturers were required to stop blades in a few seconds and most had brake on mower that might disconnect the engine while still running. Think most of those systems didn't last long. Now they just stop the engines fast too with band brakes on flywheels. Maybe someone just modified or jambed that orig brake system, as it was PIA? I would think a True Value store could write or call Cotter and Co, (wholesaler) and get manuals or info on machines they made. I worked in TV store back then, and lots of that add-on hardware was junk and didn't last. They always made me try to repair them for customers, but finally sent them down street to repair shops. Good riddance!

Thank you, great advice and information.

It has the band brake and, in the light of the morning I could see that the pivot point underneath the pulley was rusted - hit it with release spray and after some tapping managed to free it up so it works now.

The Model number is: 130902 Type: 113601 and Code: 85091907 the model number on the front of the engine is 92 and it also has Size: 22 on it.

I imagine it is a pretty strong mower with a 5 hp engine? Going to use it on rougher lawn areas. Starts up real good and runs great so hope to sort out the other problems and get it going again - I like the old look with spoked wheels as well.
