JD318 and 420...what parts interchange?

I've got a 318 at home that I just got running. Good tractor.

I ran into someone giving away a 420. It's missing the engine, but everything else appears to be there.

What parts interchange between the two? If the hydrostats or other major components are the same, then I'll go get it.

You can look at the partsbooks for the two at jdparts.com.

You do NOT need to register to view or print the parts information, only if you need to check availability or pricing.

Hydrostats are not the same. The 420 is a good tractor and you can't beat free. If the hydro is good, you can repower the 420. Several places sell kits.

The 420 is a very good mower. If you don't want it and it's anywhere close I would want it. Put another engine in it and you've got a sweet mower.

Tell us where it's located if you decide not to get it.

The Orignal engine was similar to the 318"s, but 20hp instead of 18 and it was also an Onan. You can repower it with Honda, Briggs Vanguard or Kohler V twins. They are an excellent tractor, longer wheel base over a 318, locking rear end with hi/lo range. I have seen guys take the rear end from a 420 and put it in a 318 to build up the ulimate 318. If you want 2 tractors, I would hunt down an engine and get the 420 running again. Or you can part out the 420 and use the 2 speed rear end with diff lock in your 318 as an upgrade. Cheers Mike
