Single cyl. 17hp Kaw, it back fires when trying to start. blows out both the exhaust and the carburetor(it is bad enough I am afraid the cops are going to show up with guns drawn)I checked the flywheel key and at TDC both rockers have free travel in them,and seems to have good compression. help.
 
I have one on a J.D. that does the same thing if not started for a month or more. Mine has the throttle and choke on the same handle.What I do is set throttle to half or less,choke the engine by pulling the choke linkage on the side of the engine.Usually starts right up.So far no more heart stopping backfires.

if this is a older 17 kaw with a external igniter its going bad
its a little silver box beside dipstick with single white wire going to it

I had the same problem on a 14 hp kaw on a john deere ,I had to replace the flywheel ,sheared every key i put in ,so far so good hth Dwayne
