Peerless transmission 700 012

I have read some of the other post and have noticed some very knowledgable members.

I have a peerless transmision model 700 012. The case half with the input shaft broke. The input shaft was just moving up and down, the (approximately) 2" long part of the casting where the input shaft goes through snapped off for some reason. I found a new half and have ordered it. So here are my questions:

1) Is there any upgrade or improvements I should consider doing to it while I have it apart.
2) Is there anything I can do to reinforce the input shaft area so it doesn't snap off again,
3) I am putting in the bentonite grease it calls for, but since I completely cleaned everything (Didn't want any foriegn debris in the old grease to cause any problems). What should I do about the needle bearings it says not to use bentonite grease for those, just EP grease.

Once I get the new half, I am going to assemble it without grease and try to check everything out for binding or bent parts to see if I can figure out what caused the breakage.

Thanks

Most of these transmission use Double Aught ( 00 ) Grease. This is the same grease Snapper uses in their transmissions. The only time you need the "EP" additive is when you have a spiral or Hypoid gear set in the transmission. All of you gear sets but one are Spur type. the other one should be a bevel type.
