briggs V-twin running problems

I have a Simplicity tractor with a model 303777 16hp V-twin. It idles horrible and has for the last few years. I have cleaned and messed with the settings on the carb and it doesn't seem to really do anything unless I set the idle high enough to get rid of the erratic and loping idle, then it is running almost wide open! I have been told these things idle like crap anyways. Is there anything I should do? Is the new carb kit an improvement or should I just replace the carb? It was built in 1996.

Have you check to see if the gasket between the carb and engine is good and carb is tight? Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak.

you probably did not get the idle ports cleaned. That should be a Vanguard engine and the carb, being a japanese prodct needs a little more attention to the small ports than most people can or will do. Did you acctually put a kit in or just wipe it off?

I pulled it apart and boiled it and installed a kit. I has ran lousy for years only at idle, and my dad had the same tractor and it ran bad too. It is a Vanguard engine with an Aisan carb on it.

I would be checking for something else then, bad valves, intake leak, because Vangards are the best runnign engine that Briggs make. there quality is every bit as good as Honda

"best runnign engine that Briggs make"

Sadly, that SHOULD read "Daihatsu makes"!

OK, Briggs markets under their name, my bad. LOL or Mitsubishi. They have used both.

I am thinking that I was told some of the Briggs twins with the plastic mainfold had a tendancy for the manifold to warp. That may be your vacum leak.

As noted earlier, "boiling" the carb won't clean it. Probably need to take it apart (really, really take it down), and get in there and make sure every passage is clear.
