I have an Onan CCKA-MS 2111G 16.5HP engine on a 1974 Gravely 816 tractor. It appears the voltage rectifier/regulator is bad as it puts out 18VDC at 3600 RPM, 13VDC at idle. All of the standard checks have been done. Alternator output is 52VAC, all wiring and connectors are in good shape, battery is new, no appreciable voltage drops across system, good grounds. Onan wants $750 for a new rectifier/regulator, part #305-0919. (That"s right, $750.) I would like to replace it with a different suitable 3-wire voltage regulator for around $50 - $75. Problem is, this regulator has 4 wires. 2 are from the alternator, and one goes to the battery through a 30 amp fuse. The last wire is connected to the postive side of the ignition coil, which in turn is also connected to the key switch, and thus to the positive side of the battery when the key is turned on. Any idea what this wire is for? I lifted this wire from the regulator and it made no difference, (but then again the regulator is already broken.) My plan is to install a 3 wire regulator and disconnect the wire between the regulator and the ignition coil permanently. Would like to know the purpose of this wire before I did though. Anyone out there had any experience with this? Onan reps have been a dead end on this issue, and cannot tell me what this wire is for. Local repair shops and a few others I have found on the web are also puzzled by this wire. Gravely forum and Ebay have not yieleded any results. The regulator is a Wico Prestolite FVR4012, and long obsolete. (Pardon my caution on this matter, but I just spent $1100 rebuilding the engine, and am a little wary about modifications to the electrical system without full knowledge of the possible impact.) Thanks
