Hi. I have a JD 316 with a 38" deck that's pretty worn. Talked with a dealer that said a new 48" deck can be purchased from JD for about $900. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks, Wayne.

Wayne - The 48" deck is a "replacement" deck for the older 300 series tractors. It is a good deck and has a higher vacuum capacity than the older shallow decks. If you have a later model 316 with an Onan engine, and your tractor"s in good to very good condition, I"d say not a bad choice. If you have a Kohler-powered 316, or your tractor"s in fair to poor condition, I"d look for a used deck. - Dave

The new decks work well, but the 48" might not be the best option for you.
If you have the early 316 with the 16hp single cylinder Kohler engine, then I would first determine if the tractor is worth putting a $900 deck under it, or spend a few hundred on a good used deck.
Secondly, a large deck will put alot more strain on your engine. Personally, I would not put anything larger than the 48" under your tractor.

I would look for a used 46" deck from a 317,318, or 330 that has the front gauge wheels. They are easy to find, and you can add a powerflow bagger to it later if you like.

The deck sizes that will mount to your tractor though are 38",46",48",and 50". The decks also fit models 120,140,300,312,314,316,317,318,330,322,332 tractors. The 48" and 50" are mainly used on the larger tractors that have the yanmar engines, or the 318 with the twin onan.

I have an early 316 and a 330 and 332

Good Luck!
Mike
