I replaced the head gasket on the unit. I set the piston on TDC and tightened the hydraulic valve to 100 inch pounds. Sealed it up - It was Dieseling real bad - wouldn t idle . So I took it apart and set the piston about 3/16 After TDC and now it runs better. My question is how do I set timing on this critter.
And don t worry about carbon on head or valves ( it s clean)

Don't quite understand. "Tightened the hydraulic valve.."

How do you tighten a hydraulic valve?
If you are talking about the Rocker Arm. They need to be tightened "unloaded". Meaning that the Push Rod should not be placed in the rocker arms slot until after the bolt is tightened to spec.

If you have true hydraulic lifters that should be all that is needed.

If you have adjustable valves. The rocker arms will have a nut with a T-25 torx screw in the center of it. Then you will need to adjust the valves to specs.
Only three ways to change the timing on the engine.
1. Tear it down and move the cam gear or crank gear one tooth. Do this and the engine will never run correctly.

2. Shear the Flywheel key. Do this and the engine will not run correctly.

3. Bend the push rods. Do this and the engine will not run correctly.
You can not loosen the Rocker Arm and rotate the engine then re-tighten it and change the timing. Never happen.
I would put my money on a bent push rod and/or out of spec valve clearances.
