Magneto timeing

Need to install a Fairbanks magneto on a THD wisconson engine. Instructions Ifound said to line up marks on engine with it TDC on compression. Turn magneto till impulse snaps. Hold mag there Install with mark on gear lined with
center of hole. The mark on the mag gear is not in the hole with out turning the magneto. What am I missing?

Wisconsin used a WIDE variety of mags.

Is yours original to the engine?

Bottom line is, timing marks or not, the mag impulse needs to snap @ tdc.

If it doesn't, advance or retard it a tooth at a time 'til it does.
