John Deere LA140 Problem

I have a JD model LA140 riding mower, i bought it to fix a couple things and resell....well there is a problem i cannot figure out. This machine has a 23 HP briggs engine on it, the first time you go to start it up she fires up good and runs perfect, whether you run it 5 minutes or 5 hours when you cut the engine off it will not start back, just grinds and grinds. I removed the carb solenoid, cleaned and lubricated it but that did not help, so yesterday i put a new carburetor on it, thought that would be a sure fix......wrong, it still does the same thing!! What could it be? Its probably something simple but i have no clue what to do to it now!

Yes, I'm confused too! Is it turning over and not starting, or is the starter just grinding at the ring gear? Sometimes we have to interpret the local dialect to figure out what's happening! When I am troubleshooting an engine problem I use my primer bottle, I can dribble just the correct amount of gas into an engine to run it without even having a carburetor mounted, that proves it's not ignition. I see so many folks run out and start buying parts without any idea what the problem really is.

Are you trying to start it without choking it when it is hot? Some of those Briggs engines need choking all the time hot or cold to get them going.

One thing to check: (This only works IF the choke works off the throttle lever.) Push the throttle beyond the 'full Throttle' position to choke and then the linkage pushes the choke arm upward, causing the choke to close. So what you want to do is push the throttle forward and then reach around the front of the engine, the choke lever on the engine control will be on the right side, see if you can push it upward any more than the throttle cable pushed it. IF you can, loosen the clamp on the throttle cable and pull it to the left until that choke lever won't go any higher.

It is turning over but not running, it has a choke knob and cable not made in with the throttle lever.

Since it runs OK otherwise I suspect a bad coil or ignition trigger if it has one. Try pulling the plug wires when it's in a no start condition. Leave the plugs in it and attach a couple old plugs with the gaps widened out to 1/8 or so. It doesn't tell the story to just pull the plugs and spin it over. One it spins faster and two the plugs fire harder under compression, thats why you need to widen the gaps.

I agree with Butch. Have one right now. Misfires/backfires when you start it. Module on right side bad. The old twin 16/18 HP Briggs are good for heat soaking the modules and will not start when hot. Start right up when cooled off.

I have to choke my Briggs to start hot or cold ( or as someone above mentioned a dribble of gas in carb also works).
