318 front PTO clutch sometimes won't engage

My front PTO clutch sometimes won't engage. I think it may have too much clearance. I managed to obtain an owner's manual (red dealer
service shop copy) and an Onan service manual for P216, P218, P220, P224. Neither of them show how to adjust the clutch clearance.

First things first. Check the wiring for continuity, for clean shiny connections, and for kinks or breaks in the insulation.
Then, you will need a socket wrench and extension and a feeler gauge.
You check the gap using slots in the outside cover of the PTO unit.
The air gap should be around .018. The hard part is getting a uniform gap all the way around.

Actually, I was told to adjust to .011 on my 318 years ago. be sure to adjust at all three slots.

You're on the right track. Adjust clearance and be sure battery voltage is not low and wiring is good.

here is a very good, simple explanation of adjustment: (copied from another post by Dave on this forum)
Take the grill off the front of the tractor, it snaps in place so just pull it off from the front. Use a 0.018 flat feeler gage. You will see three hex nuts on the face of the clutch unit, spaced 120 degrees apart. Along the side of the clutch near each nut, is a slot, (three total) that's where the feeler gage slips in. Slip the feeler gage into one of the slots, and tighten or loosen the adjacent hex nut until you achieve a slight drag on the feeler gage. Repeat the process at the other two locations. Then recheck all three in order until no further adjustment is needed to feel a slight drag on the feeler gage.

I remember .013 as factory spec. when I worked in a dealership. There was a later update from Deere to adjust them to the .018. There were issues with the electric PTO Clutch burning out from the .013 clearance.
