318 checking filling transmission/hydraulic system

I checked the sight glass as instructed in the owner's manual. The hose going into the bottom of the sight glass is also clear so I can see the oil in it. The oil level in the hose is way below the sight glass. I added a full quart of ATF type F as the owner's manual said I could use that. The oil level in the hose didn't change. I started adding another quart and after adding about a pint it wouldn't take any more. The oil level in the hose still didn't change. My wife drove the tractor ahead a few feet and it moved OK. I also cycled the three point up and down a few times. After I moved the tractor I noticed a large puddle of oil where it had been sitting like maybe it was coming out of the vent after being over filled. I didn't get down and look under the tractor because it was getting dark (and COLD). I also have a hard time getting up from the ground due to some health issues so I don't get on the ground unless I have to.
Any ideas or advice of where to look?

Thanks,
Arvin

The hose for sight glass use may be old and broken a the lower fitting into the transmission. That could explain why the level did not change and the resultant puddle.

Today I removed the seat/floor pan assembly and the fuel tank so I could see the transmission. When I added oil it came out around the fitting that connects the fill tube to the transmission. The sight glass still shows the oil is low. I removed the upper end of the sight glass hose at the transmission along with the hose fitting in the transmission. The fitting is clear, and I put a short wire into the transmission to check for oil. It was full to the fitting. I tried to blow back through the sight glass hose and couldn't. I think there may be some sludge or possibly some ice blocking it. I went to town and purchased some new clear vinyl tubing to replace the old hose. That will be tomorrow's project.

I removed the bottom fitting for the sight glass tube from the axle housing. Oil drained freely from the housing. The fitting was plugged off completely and showed that it had been hit once. I think a previous owner had hit something and damaged the hose and apparently had plugged the fitting with some kind of epoxy or similar substance until they could fix it properly which they never did. I had to drill out the fitting. The sight glass now works properly.

Now I need to tackle the neutral creep issue but I will wait until I get a shop manual.

You can get the instructions for adjusting out neutral creep on WFMachines.com.
You start by fixing all the wobbled out/worn out parts of the linkage.
So - don't go putting the seat and fender deck back on just yet.
