Date a Bolens lawn tractor

A friend gave me a Bolens that he remember as a kid. My g-son and his father took it on as a project. Short version...engine was trashed. They cleaned it, painted it, is now yard art....

Was wondering if it could be dated from the tag...

I think that is the 20HD. 1956 or 1957.

Thats a shame to let that rot in the yard for the next 20:years. That motor is totally rebuildable.

I agree. No such thing as yard art. It is letting a venerable machine rot away. Cold be repaired.

The deck mounts on the front. I have a turning plow, snow blade and disc set up for it too. They have a unique belt drive varible speed set up that works like an automatic trans. I retired it years ago and it is setting in the back of my shed.

My friend thought it was 1957 but was going off memory. He had it last run in the early 80's. It sat in a suburban metal shed ever since. When they took the head off they found this....

The carb float had rusted into pieces.

None of us could justify spending any substantial cash on the machine.

That's a cool looking little tractor, I'd have to try bringing it back to life.

I got this little 1966 Wheel Horse out of a junk yard in about 1980 and that's where it belonged. Yours's looks brand new
compared to mine. I finally rebuilt it about four years ago, every piece of tin was bent and smashed or rusted out.

I take it too the local Threshing show now and ride it around, works out good because my legs don't go too far anymore.

I believe that's called a Ride-a-Matic. I looked at one many years ago but the hood and grill were missing. It had a unique drive train.
