I got a free, "ran when parked" 8 years ago JD 130 and I have been struggling with the harness and why it wouldn't crank. Decided to go old school to see if it would start and bypassed the whole harness. Hooked it up as I understand solenoid starting systems. Only real questions were where to hook up the 2 black wires coming out of the engine and the 2 white wires that become 1 white wire. Researched and grounded 1 black and the other to the ign post on the key switch. Didn't do anything with the white because research says it is for charging. It cranked but wouldn't start!

The plug was sparking so I cleaned it up and it started...with a lot of smoke, ran real rough and then stopped after a minute. I figured I had fire and air so I took off the carb and did a medium clean of the inside and the jets with cleaner and air. It kicked a few times, adjusted the screw on the carb 1-1/2 turns and it wouldn't start.

I walked away for now, but plan to check the valves, but after that I will be stumped. Ideas?

A partial carburetor cleaning like that might not be enough.
You will probably need to take the carb apart and soak it in cleaner.
Make sure the passages are clear, and the float valve opens and closes properly.
That tractor has a magneto - not coil and points - ignition system.
The two black wires are likely AC power from the alternator and may need to be hooked to the voltage regulator.
Wiring diagram can be found at the John Deere parts website.
