John Deere 212 Varaiable Speed Drive

Hi ,

How does the variable speed drive on these mowers work ? When I move the lever that operates it on the right hand side of tractor it seems / feels like the bottom of the lever isn't hooked to anything ! I forgot to look when I had the battery and battery tray out today checking the wiring and replacing the ignition coil . As I've never used this system before please school me on how it operates and how to use it , please !

Thanks ,
Whizkid

It's basically the same as a variable speed combine drive only on a smaller scale.
The lever goes forward for faster, pull back for slower.
There are a few things that can go wrong.
Common issues are, a middle sheave that is stuck and won't slide, and bad, missing, or broken belts to missing or broken springs.
Seriously, look around on the WFMachines website.
You will find a lot of threads there about diagnosing and repairing that drive system.
Buy the belts and springs at a John Dealer either in person or online.

I have an old 110, not a 212. I don't think the lever will do anything unless the tractor is moving. If you happen to put belts on get them both from John Deer and there is a method to adjust the variator. Every couple of years the center sheave sticks on mine and I have to remove the belts and free it up.
