John Deere 318 Shift Dampener problem

Hello everyone, I have a John Deere 318 (Serial number M00318X018380). When I push the hydro shift lever it starts to jerk. I did a little research and one of the cures was to replace the gas operated cylinder / shift dampener part number Am104880. It is has been substituted with part number AM133368, it is about 7 long and skinny, it looks like a lift cylinder off of a car hood or rear hatch only not as long. It is attached to the shift lever and is located under the hood between dash and battery. I pulled the old one off and it doesn't appear to function as it should, at least it does not work like another style that I have that fits on the back of some of the 318 tractors, so I need to replace it. John Deere has them for around $150, but I am not willing to pay that at this point. Does anyone have a good use one or know of any more reasonable replacements? Thanks, Jack

This has been a problem, and DEERE used several different designs/updates over the years.

The part is simple a little shock absorber vs. a gas-filled lift strut on a car hood.

When held in the same orientation as when it's mounted on the tractor does it resist quick in and out movements? Any sign of oil leakage past the rod seal?

Were the absorber mounting bolts TIGHT so there's no ''lost motion'' there?

ANY wear and looseness in the linkage pivot points from the control lever to the hydro add up and can allow the ''jerking'' to get started even with a good ''absorber''.

Do what it takes to tighten those points up.

I have even installed little Heim joints on similar DEERE hydro linkages when the pivot points were worn.

Snug up the adjustment (nut #16) on the friction pads making the lever harder to move (but not uncomfortably so).

Replace the friction pads #13 as needed.

IMHO, getting the play out of the linkage and keeping the lever friction snug will go a long way towards ending the ''jerky lever'' problem.
