Left ignition key on

Most likely the battery went dead, so try charging it up or replace if needed, trying cranking the engine if it starts it good if not check for spark at the spark plug if no spark check the points

You might think about that, if the kids were out in the barn trying to start the mower? You migbt want to hide the keys if so.

IH10020:

I would check also to see if the Ignition Points are burnt, and Ignition Coil, to see if it has an open primary winding.

If the points were closed, check them, coil and condenser. Also the ignition switch as it could have gotten really hot as would the wire connections if plug type.

If the points were open, you got lucky

IF the battery was drained completely I would use a battery maintainer to recharge it. They charge at about a 1/2 amp or so. The low amperage seems to help the battery take a charge. I just recharged a 6 year old battery that hadn't been used in years - it was dead enough it wouldn't even click when the key was turned on. Left it sit for a couple days with the maintainer on it and it came back to life and has been a good battery this summer. According to the seller this thing had sat outside on a Cub Cadet 1450 for at least 3 years without being touched.
