I have a 26 hp Briggs that starter won t always engage. It sounds like the solenoid clicks but starter doesn t spin engine over.
What s up ? Ed Will

Could be the solenoid going bad, try jumoing direct to the starter with a jumper cable if the starter work every time its the solenoid

Does the starter spin but the drive gear doesn't jump up into the flywheel ring gear?? If it does it isn't the solenoid. The drive area may need to be cleaned if it has oil/dirt on it

Check to see if the valves are adjusted
properly. I've had several people think they
had a starter problem and the valves were
out of adjustment not letting the
compression release to start

Its a regular Briggs engine, not a Vanguard, isn't it?

Well, you can try a new solenoid.

If it is doing it on a regular basis, and you have a volt-meter, try connecting between the wire at the starter (+) and the battery (-) If
the solenoid clicks and you don't see any voltage on the meter, (Or its real low, like below like 8v) then the contacts are bad in the
solenoid.

Also if for some reason the bendix gear on the starter gets hung in the flywheel, sometimes it will do this too. try turning the engine
clockwise from the flywheel side and see if you can hear the starter spinning too.

Usually, if it is the valves out if adjustment the starter will attempt to turn the engine but only a little bit, not a full turn.

Also check the switch. On JD they are famous for going bad(yellow wire on the
back of the switch) Just a thought.
