Troy-Bilt Super Bronco Mower Automatic Trans

Needed a worn vee belt changed and if one is worn; so, I changed both the blade belt and the drive belt. The so-called auto trans is really a variable sheave pully type arrangement. NOW I cannot get the mower to go forward nor backward. I printed the belt diagram and to make sure it was properly routed. It appears a spring is needed to tighten the tension on the belt, but I don't seem to remember one.
Any photos would be a great help.
Thanks,

Good morning, Copperhead: You may already know this; there is a discussion group for Troy-Built tillers under Groups.IO. I have a Troy-Built, but I am not knowledgeable on it.

TroyBilt is owned by MTD. Sounds like you have a MTD lawn tractor. Their tractors have a transaxle with a Forward, Neutral, and Reverse lever. Then a sleeve drive
with gears 1 through six with a shifting lever. SO it has two levers and two belts. You have to replace both belts together or it won't work correctly. can't use
a new belt with a stretched out used belt.

It's been years since I had to replace those belts. I do remember at least one spring. Seems like it was about one inch maybe inch and half diameter and bout
eight inches long. Should be able to see the spring if you remove the cover just in front of the seat where the gear shifter is. If you remove the battery and
plastic box. You can gain access to the pulley on top of the transaxle.

I think if you go to the Troybilt website. look up your model number you can find a diagram showing the belts and related parts.

There are many variations of that MTD drive arrangement. Most work about the same way.

Most use a tension spring on an idler pulley arm that tightens the rear belt. Make sure the belt is on the idler pulley and the spring is
pulling that belt tight. If it is o.k.,

Check that your belt is routed correctly past any belt guides. The variable pulley sometimes has a tab the front/lower belt goes behind
and it needs to be on the correct side.

If you bent the belt guides away from the engine pulley to put the belt on, bend them back. If you don't, and it ever starts pulling, even
standing on the brake pedal probably won't stop it!

Then get on the mower, start it up. Shift to Neutral. (You don't want it moving while you are doing this.) Move the speed control to its
highest speed setting and let the clutch out. (Or push the 'GO' pedal all the way down.) About 2/3 of the way to 'fast' you should feel
the front belt tension up and start everything turning. This puts the belts in 'phase'. So when the front belt is running near the center
of its groove in the variable pulley, the upper belt is near the outside of its groove.

Hopefully this can get it going.
