new technology in riding lawn mower blade design ?

Recently refurbished a '93 Toro 12 38 riding lawn mower. In the process I replaced the original mower blades with high lift blades. The original blades were flat and attached to the shaft in a 5 inch long channel bracket. The new blades would not fit into the bracket. The new blades had a different design in that the center of the blade was not flat but had a curved edge which I believe added to the strength of the blade. Am I right and should not have to worry about eliminating the channel steel bracket? Any and all thoughts are welcome. Happy 4th of July!!

I suspect you were sold the wrong blades. Those with curved edges may be mulching blades for a different deck. Usually, replacement blades, even mulchers are made to fit the original configuration, because of potential liability.

Thanks for the reply. I agree. I will attempt to find blades compatible for this vintage mower.

Tell me the blade length and center hole size. Some OEM blades have number stamped into them that would be good.
I might be able to come up with aftermarket part number.

Thanks for the reply. There were no numbers or markings on the completely worn out blades i replaced. About positive they are 20 inch blades with a 3/8 inch bore. The replacement high lift 20 inch blades came from Menards in central Minnesota. Again, any and all input is welcome.

Most blades have the part number stamped on the top side. Takes a good cleaning with a wire wheel to find it. Try CarQuest or NAPA. They sell the PRIMELINE brsnd
of mower parts. Often they can get blades for the older mowers.

I can't find anything with 3/8 inch center hole for Toro. Universal blades 20 inch with 3/8 inch hole are common. The blade Rodneys51Cub referenced it real close to 19.312 with 5/8 inch center hole. Blade is 2 1/2 inch wide.3/15 thick.
Says it fits 612, 616, 620 ZT

The blades for the newer Toro mowers are formed, not a flat 'bar' like the old ones. Since Toro runs them on the newer mowers with just a
washer under the bolt head and since if you try to re-use the channel supports you will just warp them, I am certain you can run without
them with no problems.

The channel pieces were to stiffen the original blades. If those are run without the channel supports they can dip down an inch or more and
stay that way. You might want to hang on to those channels in case you later on mount original style blades on it.

P.S. the parts guys where I work sell the wrong blades for those Toro mowers all the time. If we don't have your model and serial on file it
is difficult to get the exact right blades for those old mowers.

I've noticed lately (last few years) it seems a plain old hi lift blade is NA, for anything. Most are discontinued, all that seems available is these goofy looking 3 in one type blades
Its lucky if you can find anything like that in someone's old stock. I dont like the new designs, with the hump along the cutting edge.

Can go here Blades

Then search for all blades with 3/8" holes, etc.

unless the blades are off set, they need to be not more than 19" .
