JD 265 Question

I bought a Deere 265 mower from a friend, got it for a really good deal, runs and drives great, he said the mowing belt was broke, i got under there
and found the problem, the small belt that goes on the bottom pulley of the PTO clutch moves the back pulley but the lower front one doesn't move, i
can turn it by hand but when i engage the PTO switch thats when the bottom pulley won't turn, the belt is spinning on it, and nothing on the deck
moves. I was thinking the PTO clutch unit might be bad? I've never dealt with one of these PTO clutch units and didn't know much about how they
work.

The PTO is an electric controlled clutch just like the clutch on a car AC.

Not 100% sure what you are asking

I left my email open.

Send me email with phone number and I'll call you. What time is good for you?

I have a JD 275. Had to replace the PTO bearings.

The way I am reading it, you can turn the pto (drive) pulley by hand when the pto switch is off.
But with engine running and the pto switch on, it Is turning.
But the belt is slipping and thus not turning the downstream pulleys?
If the belt is not smoking at the pto, check to make sure the deck is properly installed. As in not far enough to the back or front of the tractor, effecting belt tension.
Make sure all of the other pulleys downstream of pto drive are turning freely.

I may not be understanding what you are trying to say.

If the engine is off, switch is on, you turn the pto on, the lower pulley under the engine 'won't turn'. That would be correct. The clutch is connecting it directly to the engine crankshaft and you would be trying to spin the engine over.

You can turn the rear pulley on the deck that belt connects to and the blades on the deck turns but the belt just slips when the engine is running. If that is correct, then I am thinking the rear pulley is on a arm that is supposed to be tensioned by a spring and I am betting the spring is not present or is not hooked on in its proper location.

I'll try to explain it better, with the engine running and the PTO on, the bottom pulley under the PTO clutch is not turning, the belt is turning on the pulley, the rear pulley is turning which is making the belt spin on the bottom pulley that won't turn. The belt is not near as wide as it was new. When i turn the PTO off i can turn the bottom pulley by hand just fine. I tried to grab one of the mower blades and turn it by hand but i can't get it to budge. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. I'll have to check and see if the deck is hooked up right, i got this mower for 350 so i have room to repair some things.

Is the belt wore so bad that it is running on the bottom of the pulley and not wedging up on the sides like a v belt is designed to do.

You should be able to spin the blades by hand when engine and pto is off.

What is turning the rear pulley? What is causing it to turn?

I am thinking if you look up above that rear pulley you will see another pulley and a belt coming back to it from under the engine.

It sounds like your front/center spindle is locked up. And you need a new belt too.

Pictures would be nice.
